Proof of Man’s Inhumanity Essay
Past studies about the Holocaust reveal the motivation behind Adolf Hitler’s annihilation of the Jews and other races. He believed that â€Å"they were responsible for Marxism, democracy, the outbreak of World War I, and Germany’s collapse in 1918, as well as being the invisible hand behind the Weimar republic†(Fischel 4). He was fed up with the Jews’ continuous settlement in the German land. He resented the fact that they were being too involved with the country’s politics and businesses. Reasons like these seemed too shallow for Hitler to arrive to a â€Å"final solution†of exterminating the Jews and other localities which he believed did not belong to the upper or Aryan class of society. The method that the Nazi used to wipe out an entire race and religion was the concentration camps. In camps such as Auschwitz, Dachau, Treblinka, Sobibor, and Belzec, millions of people, most of whom were Jews, died in violent ways. The most common way of exterminating them was through the use of gas chambers in camps. In the anthology of the Holocaust, Piper reveals that, â€Å"The efficacy of such conventional methods of killing is best illustrated by the fate of 10,000 Soviet prisoners of war who were transported to the camp in October 1941†(Piper 372). It was one of the first exterminations performed during the Holocaust wherein Piper added that, â€Å"After five months of starvation, hard labor, beatings, and outright killings, only 945 were still alive on March 1, 1942†(Piper 372). The prisoners were evidently treated like animals with no rights, dignity, and privacy. Everything was taken from each individual such as clothes, jewelries and other material belongings. The Holocaust is a clear proof that this world has once gone too far in following the principle of â€Å"the survival of the fittest. †A person like Hitler had put matters in his own hands, which was a selfish thing to do. Nobody has the right to manipulate God’s creation because it annoys you or threatens your power. Concentration camps are the visible evidences that would always remind people of what selfishness, power, and racism can do to an entire race. The remains of these camps would always remind people of the reality that this world is a mortal place and that evil will always be presentâ€â€unless we learn how to accept the shortcomings and difference of every person that we encounter. Andrew Johnson set policies which were different for black and white people. According to Walter L. Fleming in The Mississippi Black Code," laws were passed after the Civil War that drastically limited civil rights and the liberties of black people. In the beginning, freedmen and black people faced discrimination, violence, and segregation, but black leaders continued working diligently and with the passage of time, equality took form. Black Code is used to refer to legislation which was passed by Southern states at the end of the Civil War to control the labor and movement of slaves. During 1865, every Southern state passed Black Codes that restricted the freedman. These codes gave African Americans certain rights: such as legalized marriage, ownership of property and limited access to the courts, but denied them the rights to testify against whites, to serve on juries or in state militias, or to vote and express legal concern publicly. This document was written by Fleming during 1906 1907. The author wrote this article to explain the history of black people and about their troubles they had faced during the reconstruction period. When white people make their government, they made their own rules. According to Vagrant Law in sec 2, state of Mississippi required all black persons to sign yearly labor contract but not white citizens. The reason was that white people wanted to keep black people under their controls. They want to keep all black people as slave. The narrator doesnt finish his thoughts at the ending of every line which kept me guessing and trying to piece it all together. First, I would like to describe a little bit about the poem. The narrator was a Duke, and his last duchess was a beautiful young woman, but she as too intrigued by everything she saw. She was also, too nice in his eyes, because the smile she always gave him for his brilliance, he could see she would also give it to the world. In the beginning of the poem the narrator is already speaking toa man and showing off his painting on the wall done by Fra Pandolf. He makes sure he states the artist name because he know he will soon be asked the question of how he captured such a wonderful painting. The Duke goes on to say: How such a glance came there; so, not the first Are you to turn and ask thus. The Duke points out that his wife is too easily impressed and likes whatever she sets her eyes on. But the Duke tells us that he doesnt like or never discussed his issues and Jealousy with his wife. And I choose Never to Stoop, this tells us that he never told her bout the things he disliked as he thought his issues will be stooping below his level. Even though the Duchess is dead, the Duke likes to think that he still has control of his wife by hiding her behind a curtain. He does this so that her glance doesnt attract another man. All the errors that his wife made are actually qualities that someone should find magnificent in a wife. He then represents his guests attention o his latest achievement, a new bronze in the shape of Neptune, the mythical Roman god of the sea. I think the Duke is making a sly remark to his own achievements in capturing his next wife. I also think that he believes of himself as Neptune, powerful and ruling. Browning use of irony throughout the poem is the readers feelings of sympathy for the last Duchess. The character in Porphyrys Lover is revealed in a similar way as the narrator gives a review introduction of his feelings to the reader. Browning uses many techniques, when human emotion is linked to the weather which is seen as pitiful: The rain set early in to-night, The sullen wind was soon awake It tore the elm-tops down for spite And did its worst to vex the lake. When Porphyry enters the room, the mood does change. Whereas at the start of the poem you feel like the colors are cold, blue and grey. But as soon as she enters, the warmth livens the room; the colors are bright, oranges and yellows to lift the senses. Before she enters, the lovers mood is full of fear. Once she is present, the lover wants his moment to last forever, he doesnt want her to leave him, and he wants her all for myself and in a way he is similar to the Duke. She is not afraid to show off her body: She put my arm around her waist, and made her smooth white shoulder bare and all her yellow hair displaced, but suddenly the lovers mood changes during the poem.
